Mount Prospect renews Flock license plate camera contract after nationwide lookup breach

On September 18, 2025, Mount Prospect village board approved a two-year renewal of its Flock Safety license plate camera contract for $137,000, despite a June data breach. The June breach involved Mount Prospect and about 80 Illinois agencies inadvertently enabling a “nationwide lookup” feature, giving unauthorized out-of-state agencies access. Flock implemented safeguards including removing violating agencies and AI audits. The renewal splits into agreements: $72,000 for 10 cameras, a portable camera, and software; $65,000 for 13 additional cameras pending permits. Chief Michael Eterno said the system helped with stolen cars and violent crimes.
